If you're considering an eyelid lift in San Francisco or eyelid surgery ...

The Best Candidates for Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery can be performed conveniently for anyone in the Bay area. Blepharoplasty is best suited to men and women of any age who have healthy facial tissue and muscles. In arriving at realistic goals for your eyelid surgery, you should also take into account several key questions:

  • Do you have any medical eye conditions, such as glaucoma or dry eyes?
  • Have you had a detached retina?
  • Do you have diabetes?
  • Do you suffer from cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure?
  • Do you have an under-active or over-active thyroid?
  • Do you suffer from Graves’ disease?
  • Are you a nonsmoker?
  • Do you have any medical conditions that could impair healing from surgery?
  • Are you committed to proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, including moderate amounts of physical exercise?
  • Can you fully disclose your health history to Dr. Mosser, including current medications, your use of vitamin and herbal supplements, as well as your use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs?

Surgery Specifics—What You Can Expect from Blepharoplasty

Dr. Mosser performs eyelid surgery in several locations in San Francisco. Plastic surgery procedures may be scheduled for his office at 450 Sutter in Union Square, as well as California Pacific Medical Center, and St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco.

The specific surgery you will undergo depends on the unique characteristics of your face, realistic goals that you and Dr. Mosser have agreed on, and the specific conditions you want to correct.

For example, drooping upper eyelids typically can be corrected with an incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. From here Dr. Mosser will reposition fat deposits, tighten the surrounding muscles and tissue, and remove excess skin, if necessary. The result is a firmer upper eyelid contour.

Correcting the lower eyelid, on the other hand, may require a trans-conjunctival incision, which means that it is hidden inside the lower lid. From this incision, fat is repositioned or removed and muscles are tightened. Alternatively, an incision might be made just below the lower lash line. And as with surgery on the upper lid, excess fat and skin may be removed.

According to your specific goals, a mid-face lift, which corrects drooping in the cheeks and the creases that form around the nose to the outer mouth can sometimes be performed through the same incisions as your eyelid surgery. A face lift and neck lift may likewise be performed at the same time as your blepharoplasty. San Francisco has a number of surgery centers where Dr. Mosser can easily address these procedures concurrently.

The incision lines in eyelid surgery are hidden within the natural creases of the eyelid, and often lower eyelid surgery can be done through the inside of the lower eyelid, without any external incisions at all.
